EVIA Project video collections are accessible via the Online Search and Browse Tool. This multifunctional application allows end users to search, browse, and access the video and multilayered metadata created by depositors in the Annotator's Workbench.

• Searching: Full-text keyword searching is enhanced by the prioritization of the result set through controlled vocabulary terms. Searches that use a controlled subject term assigned by a depositor or cataloger are pushed to the top of the result set. Each successful search returns a list of scenes that can be chosen and played back in conjunction with accompanying descriptive metadata. Because a standard MARC record is created for each collection, and because collection metadata is METS-compatible, content can be located from searches outside of the Online Search and Browse Tool. While access to video is controlled on an institution or special access basis, descriptive metadata is exposed through various library search tools.
  
  
• Faceted Searching: Search result sets are accompanied by a pane of faceted controlled vocabulary terms. All controlled vocabulary terms that appear in conjunction with the search terms are displayed, allowing users to continually refine their searches in a methodical way.
  
  
• Browsing: The EVIA Project designed a set of controlled vocabulary categories that are particularly relevant to ethnographic video, and especially ethnomusicology. Users can browse by these categories and the subject terms that have been assigned within them. Users also can browse by collection and by recording dates.
  
  
• Video Playback: Once a scene has been selected for playback, a special window displays the video segment in conjunction with playback controls, contextual selection controls via a timeline and collection outline, a tabbed metadata window for descriptive annotations and transcriptions, a subject terms pane for viewing all assigned subject terms, and controls for playlist functionalities. Playback controls include standard options within the limits of what can be achieved with streamed video. In addition, users can choose between two different bit-rates to optimize video playback for their bandwidth. A special full-screen playback feature facilitates classroom use or close research. Contextual selection controls allow users to see video segments that have been defined before and after the current segment by way of an interactive timeline and an outline view of the entire collection. Because collections consist of full recordings in at least ten-hour sets, this kind of navigation is especially useful for navigating through large collections. The layers of descriptive metadata are presented through a tabbed window so that users can move from the general overview of the collection down to the event description, scene analysis, performance text transcription/translation, and finally the minute references of an action. Another pane displays all controlled vocabulary subject terms that have been assigned to the given segment. This facilitates further searching for related content. Users simply click the playlist control to add the segment to an existing personal playlist or to a new playlist. Once inside the playlist management area, users can drag and drop segments to change the sequencing for classroom or other presentational use.
