Musical genres include taarab (sung Swahili poetry) ngoma ('traditional' dance), and dansi (urban popular music); performance contexts include competitions, weddings, and concerts.

Kelly Askew is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Afroamerican/African Studies at the University of Michigan. She is the author of numerous articles, book chapters, and the book Performing the Nation: Swahili Music and Cultural Politics in Tanzania (University of Chicago Press, 2002), which was nominated for the Herskovits Award of the African Studies Association. In addition, she co-edited, with Richard R. Wilk, The Anthropology of Media: A Reader (Blackwell Publishers, 2002). This collection of video data is drawn from fieldwork in Tanzania during the years 1992-1995, primarily in the northern coastal city of Tanga.
